Super Delegates; And the Point is What?

February 14th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I always thought of myself as a bit of a political junkie, just enough of a pundit that I got it right almost as much as I got it wrong.

But when this Super Delegate issue raised its head not long ago, I was caught napping I must say. Where did Super Delegates come from … and what’s more, what exactly are they supposed to do?

I wrote something here a few weeks ago about a serious threat to the Democratic party, the disenfranchisement of voters in Texas and Michigan. Super Delegates are an even larger threat and something the Republicans are probably smiling about night after night.

Now Super Delegates are waiting on the sidelines to help the rest of us decide who the Democratic nominee should be. I pull no punches. I think Obama is the better candidate for a number of reasons best left for another column.

If Hillary Clinton wins, so be it.

But if she’s going to win, she out to win fair and square. If the popular vote sides with her, she’ll be happy. But if the popular vote points to Barack Obama, many folks - me included - believe the Clintons might try and pull the Super Delegates out of their pocket for the benefit of Mrs. Clinton.

Forget the moment that it’s simply not fair.

Even the potential for yanking the popular vote away from the people with Super Delegates pales in comparison to the Democrats setting up silly rules in Florida and Michigan to deny people their an opportunity to legally express their support for one candidate or the other.

So hello DNC … Want to lost a few tens of millions of supporters in future campaigns? Try getting those Supers to swing for Hillary if the popular goes the other way.

It will be ugly. That should be just what the Republicans need to get one of their own into the White House next time around.
