American Voters … Engaged at Last

February 28th, 2008 · No Comments

I remember a car trip with my 40-year nephew down in Florida last summer. The talk turned to politics and despite his right leaning tendencies - I have a brother-in-law that leans that way too - I was surprised to hear that he cared little about who ran our country or what direct it took. My brother-in-law actually does even if he did choose the wrong side!

Seriously though, for decades the rant from the younger generation has been don’t know or who cares when it comes to politics. And let’s be serious, there hasn’t been much to excite anyone when we look toward who lives next around the Beltway.

But the 2008 elections have turned the country on its ear and not a moment too soon.

Whether you think John McCain is the man or Barack or Hillary - is the woman - we finally have a political sandbox where everyone is beginning to feel like they can play a role. Turnouts in the primaries have set astounding records making people in Washington think again - just like the old days - that maybe those kids are people we need to start listening to.

And who knows, maybe those folks in Washington will actually begin to realize that all of us would like to be listened to. Agreed with would be nice, but for now I’ll be happy with someone who will at least give me the time of day.

It would indeed be a nice change.
